Helping kids to develop social-emotional learning is one of my passions. I recently went into my son’s 4th grade classroom to talk with the kids about character traits and adjectives used to describe people. I offered examples and asked the kids to write two or three positive words about each of their classmates. I promised that the words would be used to create a Valentine’s surprise.
My son and I are making each student a heart-shaped word cloud or “wordle” filled with adjectives all about him or herself. This activity gets the kids thinking about the characteristics of their peers and how people are the same or different. It helps them to consider the positive aspects of all their classmates, whether they’ve been friends in the past or not. And, when the kids see their own wordle, they may learn something about their own strengths and the way others see them.
